Roommate Tips
Many single individuals and young professionals in Boston choose to live with roommates rather than shoulder the responsibilities of rent alone. If you’re planning to move and looking at apartments for rent in Boston you may be wondering whether or not having a roommate is the right choice for you. Choosing to live with a roommate is a major decision, so you may want to consider the pros and cons before making a final decision
The Pros
1. You prefer not to live alone. Even if your roommate isn’t someone you were friends with prior to living together, having a roommate does prevent you from living alone, which may be a plus if you prefer not to.
2. Shared responsibilities. Having a roommate can be convenient if you share responsibilities such as watering plants, feeding plants, etc. Also, if you go away you won’t have to worry about your apartment being empty for a long period of time.
3. More economical. Renting in Boston, especially if you’re interested in luxury apartments, can be expensive. If you have a roommate you may choose to rent a slightly larger apartment and still pay less than if you rented alone. Remember that in addition to splitting the rent, you will also share utilities and perhaps even grocery bills.
The Cons
1. Limited privacy. If you live alone you will have absolute privacy whenever you want it, however, if you choose to have a roommate you will have a limited amount of privacy as the majority of areas of your luxury apartment will be “common” areas. If you’re a very private person then having a roommate may be challenging.
2. Possible complications. Having a roommate can be a very positive experience, however, at some point you’ll likely run into some sort of conflict. These things are usually easy to get around, but it is a reality of having a roommate.
At the end of the day, whether or not to choose a roommate is ultimately up to you. Make sure you take time to evaluate your lifestyle and habits before determining whether or not this is the right choice.
